The Chores of Ordinary Life
The artist is always on call.
Creative is something you are, not only something you do. It’s a way of moving through the world, every minute, every day. The artist is always on call.
There’s no right or wrong time to do this work. It’s always happening. If we’re committed to the artistic or creative life, there are no “off hours.” You exist in a constant state of receptivity. Even if you’re washing the dishes or going for a walk, you’re still engaged on some level.
This practice is about noticing where your thoughts and attention go when you’re not directly engaged in your craft. It’s about remaining open and receptive to creative inspiration, even when you’re involved in the chores of ordinary life.
Throughout the week, try to notice and keep note of…
The thoughts that arise while showering, brushing your teeth, and getting dressed
Where your mind wanders while folding the laundry or making the bed
What catches your eye or ear while commuting or running errands
What you find yourself thinking about while waiting, between tasks, exercising, or lying in bed before falling asleep
Then reflect: Do you notice any patterns in the thoughts that surface as your mind wanders? Are there recurring themes in what draws your attention? Which of these noticings might connect to your work? Could a random thought be a seed worth exploring? Could an overheard conversation inform how you write dialogue? Could a recurring dream be hinting at something your project is missing?
We tend to wait for the big, explosive moments of inspiration. But the smaller tremors—the subtle thoughts, pulls, and fascinations—can be just as important. These small resonances can lead to surprising discoveries. Look deeply into these details.
Every moment carries the potential for insight, connection, or discovery, even the most seemingly ordinary ones. There is no telling where that next great story, painting, recipe, or business idea is going to come from. Remain aware and present at all times.

Thanks for this-I leave white index cards and sharpies in my kitchen my best ideas are when cooking free form (and I confess with wine) it’s when I’m my true self, my most intimate.
Interesting Beethoven read….🤔❤️
